Frequently Asked Questions a Massage Therapist Gets
What should I expect during my first visit to your San Diego, CA massage therapist?
Our therapist will ask you to fill out a health history form. Then, they will ask a few general questions in order to determine what areas you would like them to work on, if there are any conditions that need to be addressed, and to find out if massage is indeed appropriate for you, our therapist will sometimes perform a few assessments to evaluate your condition and to see if you are suffering from any presenting complaints.
Do I have to be completely undressed?
No, you only need to undress to a level that you are comfortable with. However, when it comes to a full body massage, most of our clients are completely undressed. But, if it makes you feel more comfortable during the session, by all means, leave on your underwear. Our therapist will work around whatever clothes you leave on as best as they can.
Do I have to cover myself with either a sheet or towel?
Depends, we call this draping, however, it will all depend on the therapist and in a few cases, the law. The vast majority of our therapists at Relax Studio Massage insist on draping. Once you have undressed and on the table under the drape, they will only uncover the part they are working on.
What do I do during a massage treatment?
Easy, just make yourself comfortable. If our therapist wants you to change position, they will either move you or will ask you to move. Otherwise, changing your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable is acceptable.
How long will a massage treatment last?
Depends, an average full-body massage treatment will often be around 1 hour. A half-hour appointment will be for a partial massage, such as neck and shoulders, back, legs and feet. Most people book a 60 to 90-minute session for greater relaxation. Always allow some relaxation time before and after a session.
Will the massage hurt?
Good question and it will all depend on the kind of massage and the depth of the strokes that you receive. For example, a light and relaxing massage which doesn’t probe too deeply into the muscles, will not be painful. However, that being said, there is what is called a ‘feels good’ hurt and an ‘ouch, cease and desist now ‘ hurt. A good massage, even a deep tissue one should always stay within the it feels good hurt range.
How often should I get a massage?
That is entirely down to you. If you are looking for occasional relaxation, then a session every 3 to 6 weeks should be sufficient.
Can I talk during my session?
Of course, if you want to talk then go right ahead. The important thing you need to remember is this treatment is all about you relaxing and enjoying it. Some therapists do discourage talking to get their clients to relax, let their mind float free and enter a state of peaceful bliss.
Do I have to listen to the likes of whale calls or flutes during my massage?
No, some of our therapists like to play slower, quieter music, or you can choose to have no music at all.
